Work Visa for Ireland
Ireland is a popular destination for persons looking for work outside of their home country. After five years of lawful residence in Ireland you may become eligible to apply for citizenship by naturalisation. Eligibility depends on your residence history, and the decision rests with the Department of Justice — it is not automatic.
If you want to work in Ireland, you must be aware of the visa requirements. If you are from a non-EU nation, you’ll need a work permit before you can work in Ireland. Work permits are divided into two categories:

IRELAND CRITICAL SKILLS EMPLOYMENT WORK PERMIT VISA
The Critical Skills Employment Permit is issued for an initial period of two years, after which it can normally be renewed. It lets you live and work in Ireland, and eligible family members can apply to join you as dependants.

Offer letter from an Irish employer

Occupations with a minimum annual salary of €40,904 (threshold effective 1 March 2026)

A relevant degree qualification or higher

A job offer valid for at least two years
IRELAND GENERAL EMPLOYMENT PERMIT
The General Employment Permit requires a minimum annual basic salary of €36,605, or €32,691 for care and home-support roles, effective 1 March 2026. Tips and service charge do not count towards it. You need a job offer before you apply, and the offer must be for at least two years. Either you or the employer can make the application. A degree is not required for this permit — eligibility rests on the occupation and the salary, which is why most chef roles come through this route rather than the Critical Skills route. The permit is issued for up to two years and can be renewed. After five years of lawful residence you may become eligible to apply for long-term residency; that decision rests with the Department of Justice.
